National Gallery of Australia Travelling Exhibitions

The National Gallery of Australia acts in an advisory capacity to the NETS Australia network.

The National Gallery of Australia's purpose is to serve the public by enhancing understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts.

For over twenty years, travelling exhibitions have been and continue to be a vital part of the Gallery's strategy of providing access to works of art to a wide audience in regional, remote and metropolitan areas throughout Australia, as well as internationally.

The Gallery recognises its mandate as being truly national Ñ its collection should not be confined within the walls of its Canberra building. Ê The Gallery's travelling exhibitions allow individual visitors wherever they may be, to share in the many great works of art that tour. Its travelling exhibitions are sourced primarily from the Gallery's collecting areas of Australian and international art and represent across media and curatorial priorities, providing exhibitions that celebrate artists' lives and their work, art movements and particular themes or artistic techniques.

The program includes exhibitions specifically curated for children, the core of which are the Elaine and Jim Wolfensohn Gift that comprise three suitcases of works of art: Red case: Myths and Rituals includes works which reflect the spiritual beliefs of different cultures; Yellow case: form, space and design presents contemporary works of art that use humour and originality to reflect the individual; and Blue case: technology, the contents of which reflect a range of art making processes. These suitcases thematically present a selection of art objects that may be borrowed free of charge for the enjoyment of children and adults in regional, remote and metropolitan centres.

Taking the National Collection to people in their own communities and initiating and participating in projects associated with the National Gallery's travelling exhibitions creates new opportunities to inspire people through works of art. It is our aim to contribute significantly to the nation's cultural wellbeing and for every Australian to experience their National Gallery of Australia wherever they may be.
